Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram. It is a day of fasting, remembering how Allah saved Musa (Moses) and his people from Pharaoh.

The Prophet ﷺ fasted Ashura and encouraged it, and said he hoped Allah would expiate the previous year by it (Sahih Muslim).
He also said that, if he lived to the next year, he would fast the ninth day too. Many Muslims therefore fast the 9th and 10th, or the 10th and 11th.
