Al-Wali — Meaning of Allah's Name

Meaning

The Protecting Friend, who supports and takes care of the believers.

In the Quran

  1. 9أَمِ ٱتَّخَذُواْ مِن دُونِهِۦۤ أَوۡلِيَاۤءَۖ فَٱللَّهُ هُوَ ٱلۡوَلِیُّ وَهُوَ يُحۡیِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِيرࣱ

    Or have they taken protectors [or allies] besides him? But Allah - He is the Protector, and He gives life to the dead, and He is over all things competent.

Surah Ash-Shura · 42:9

Allah says: “And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them” (Quran 7:180).

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). This does not mean His names are limited to ninety-nine.
